Solar & Battery Sizing Calculator Guide

How to use a solar and battery sizing screener before detailed engineering

A simple solar and battery calculator is valuable for first-pass scenario work. It is not a substitute for hourly load modelling, resource assessment, protection studies, thermal design or bankable engineering.

Daily energy demand is only the starting point. Peak demand, load shape and the timing of consumption determine whether a system that looks adequate on annual energy can meet operational requirements.

Solar capacity depends on resource and system losses. A screening model can divide daily energy by peak-sun hours and an efficiency allowance, but detailed design should use location-specific resource data and component performance.

Battery sizing should distinguish usable energy from nominal capacity. Depth of discharge, round-trip efficiency, degradation, reserve requirements and inverter power all matter.

For industrial and mining applications, resilience is as important as energy cost. Model generator interaction, black-start capability, maintenance strategy, critical loads and the consequences of shortfalls before investment approval.

What responsible use looks like

Record the assumptions used, keep source dates, preserve the original evidence, and disclose limitations when sharing a result. Where the decision is material, regulated or safety-critical, use qualified professional review.
